Vintage Mexican Day of The Dead Skull

Vintage Mexican Day of The Dead Skull

A stunning vintage genuine Día de Muertos skull made from papier mache in Mexico. This is a true work of art combining sacred symbols and ancestor worship. Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honour their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favourite foods and drinks of the one being honoured. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations! The skull on offer was produce for sale in Mexico in the early 1990s and has painted Aztec stylised artwork with a butterfly on the top of the skull, this is the symbol of resurrection and the Mexican peoples believe butterflies to be the returning souls of the dead. Size of art work approx 15cm x 15cm.
